I. Common Steps in Selection
It is extremely subtle and complicated to select bearing reasonably, including bearing structure, performance selection and lifespan calculation. Although it has no rigid orders or rules, there are consistent steps generally.
We should take the factors as follows into account in order to select the most suitable one from a variety of bearings.
Requirements of Machinery Structure, Performance and Use Condition to Rolling Bearing
For instance: Should consider the allowable space, positions for installation and detachment of bearings in structure; precision, lifespan, wear, noise, torque, etc. in performance; aging life of lubrication grease, temperature, medium, speed, additional load, vibration, impact and economy, etc. in use conditions.
Accuracy Grade
Select type, structure, play, tolerance precision and noise grade as requirements of main machinery.
Lifespan Calculation
Calculate basic rated dynamic load C of needful bearings according to additional load endured by bearing and other specific conditions such as multi-speed, variable load, impact and vibration, then determine the specification and model of bearings as the basic rated dynamic load, or check whether the lifespan and limit speed of bearings meet the requirements after the specification and model of bearing are determined preliminarily as structure of machinery and use conditions.
Check Allowable Rated Static Load
Determine needful supplementary requirements in technology according to use conditions of machinery, including related lubrication method and life of lubrication grease, rotation (swing) precision, order and method of installation or detachment, etc.
II. Configuration of Rolling Bearing
Configuration of Bearings at Fixed End and Non-fixed End
Fixed end bearing at one side provides the shaft with radial support and axial positioning at two directions, so it should be fixed in place no matter on the shaft or in the bearing block. The suitable one is radial bearing which can bear the joint load, including deep groove ball bearing, double-row or paired single-row angular contact ball bearing, self-aligning ball bearing, spherical roller bearing or paired tapered roller bearings. It is available to combine one radial bearing which can bear the pure radial load and one deep groove ball bearing, four-point contact ball bearing or bidirectional thrust bearing as a fixed end bearing. The second bearing can provide the axial positioning at two directions, requiring radial play in the bearing block during installation.
Fixed Positioning Configuration at Two Ends
Bearings at each end have single-direction positioning to shaft but in opposite direction, which are only suitable for short shaft, or some occasions requiring pretensioning. Any radio bearing which can bear single-direction axial load is fitting, such as deep groove ball bearing, angular contact ball bearing, self-aligning roller bearing and tapered roller bearing.
In bearing configuration after adjusted, shaft is provided with axial positioning by one bearing at one direction and by the other bearing at the other direction, this configuration is named “cross bearing”, which is commonly suitable for short shaft. It is available for a variety of radial bearings which can allow axial load at least in one direction, including angular contact ball bearing or tapered roller bearing.
Floating Bearing Configuration
The floating bearing configuration, also named as “cross positioning”, is suitable for occasions having low requirements on axial positioning or axial positioning to other parts of shaft.
This kind of bearing includes deep groove ball bearing, self-aligning bearing or spherical roller bearing. In all forms of configuration, the most important is to ensure one ring of each bearing can move on/in its support face, it would be best to keep the outer ring moving in bearing block. Floating bearing can be combined by two NJ cylindrical roller bearings with inner ring offset. In this occasion, axial movement is available in the bearing.
